Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Stoford Developments to carry out an archaeological evaluation on Land at Poplar Way West, Avonmouth, Bristol, hereafter 'the Site', centred on National Grid Reference 353240, 180470. The Site is currently a large area of hardstanding that is used as a storage depot for Honda. The archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of construction of two industrial units on the Site. The Site is situated on the Avonmouth Levels, and buried soil horizons of prehistoric and Romano-British date have been recorded in the vicinity. It was considered possible that soil horizons may be present from between c. 2.5m BGL to c. 4m BGL and as such may be impacted upon by any development within the Site. Seven trenches were excavated in the course of the evaluation. Two of the trenches were targeted on the course of a former Salt Rhine, which was found to have been backfilled during the construction of the Honda Depot in the late 1990's. An additional five trenches were excavated across the area to provide a sample of the underlying alluvium and stratigraphy. An archaeological feature, a shallow ditch, and possible a stabilisation horizon were identified in Trench 5. No further archaeological features were recorded. Three boreholes were undertaken using a window sampling rig. Sleeved cores were recovered from the boreholes and returned to Wessex Archaeology for further analysis by a geoarchaeologist. The sediments were found to be mineralogenic alluvia typical of the Upper and Middle Wentlooge formation, and no buried land-surfaces or in situ peat deposits were present. The deposits are considered to be of low palaeoenvironmental potential. Medieval and post-medieval pottery was recovered from Trench 2 and Trench 4 and animal bone from Trench 5. The pottery was recovered from the layers immediately below the hardstanding. |
