Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was appointed by CgMs Consulting, to carry out an archaeological evaluation on land at Cannon Lane, Tonbridge, Kent. The evaluation was carried out in respect of development proposals for the site. The proposals include the redevelopment of the site as a mixed residential/retail/commercial development with associated roads, landscaping and open spaces. The development will comprise 3-5 storey buildings supported on piled foundations with lower ground parking. The site occupies a flood plain of the River Medway and is understood to have remained undeveloped up to the late 20th century. A Desk Based Assessment compiled by CgMs Consulting (CgMs 2010) identified the potential for gravel deposits of Pleistocene date to be present at the site which may contain evidence of Palaeolithic activity; a low to moderate potential for archaeological remains of other periods has been suggested. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 16 trenches with sondages implemented at the end of trenches to ascertain the presence/absence/depth of any Pleistocene gravel deposits and any Palaeolithic evidence therein. All evaluation trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator with a toothless bucket, under constant archaeological supervision. The evaluation recorded no archaeological features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance.
