Abstract:
Wessex Archaeological were commissioned by Simon Mortimer of CgMs Consulting on behalf of Simons Developments to undertake a Watching Brief during excavations that were required to form the concrete base of a public art sculpture at Western Approaches Distribution Park. An archaeologist was present on site to observe the machine excavation of the foundation area on 16th October, 2007. The area of excavation measured approximately 5m by 2m in plan and was excavated to a depth of 0.6m. The stratigraphic sequence was uniform across the trench and consisted of a mixed topsoil and subsoil deposit to a depth of 0.3m which overlay a brown clay deposit that was constant with the top of the Wentlooge alluvial sequence that has been previously observed across the Distribution Park. No archaeological features were visible on the surface of the alluvium. Excavation continued for a further 0.3m depth which confirmed that no archaeological deposits were present. Excavation ceased at this depth.
