Abstract:		 A small area (70 sq m) was excavated on the footprint of a new house, and an intended watching brief on other intrusive works was not required as existing service runs were used and other works did not penetrate deeply enough. The excavation confirmed the presence of late Roman occupation features (ditch, pits or post-holes) and medieval pits. The Late Roman features appear to represent extra-mural settlement and may cast some doubt on the idea that the town was contracting in the 4th century.
