Abstract:
Due to the archaeologically sensitive nature of the area, Winchester City Council recommended that intrusive archaeological investigations take place during the pre-determination stage of planning. The evaluation, comprising three trial trenches, was undertaken from the 11 to the 15 December 2017. No archaeological features were recorded in any of the three evaluation trenches excavated. The deposits encountered were all naturally occurring layers of topsoil, subsoil and natural chalk, excepting in trench 1 where the uppermost stratigraphic deposit was a modern lain turf overlaying the original subsoil layer. Evidence of truncation of ground levels was observed in trench 3 and Ordinance Datum levels suggest that any archaeology has been removed by the truncation in the garden of Headmasters House. The excavation in 2007 showed a high density of archaeology in the area excavated. The lack of archaeology in any of the three trenches shows that this high density does not extend throughout the site. However, this lack of archaeology in the trenches does not demonstrate a lack of archaeology across the site. There has been truncation of ground levels in the garden of Headmaster's House as shown in the southern end of trench 3. Comparisons with the levels of the grave bases from the earlier excavation suggest that any archaeology will have been lost however, it is quite possible that graves may survive in the higher ground between the northern end of trench 3 and the 2007 excavation.
