Abstract:
Documentary research; a programme of documentary research was undertaken to inform an account of the historical development of Hill Farm (Section 4 of this report). Archival resources held by the Staffordshire Record Office were consulted on Thursday 17th September 2020. These included directories and historical maps. Online resources, including genealogical sites (Ancestry.com) and collections of historical directories were also utilised. Historical newspapers held online by the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) were investigated. A photographic survey of Hill Farm were taken and a drawn survey of elevations and plans of the historic buildings at Hill Farm. A series of scans were taken using a GeoSLAM Zeb-Revo RT (real-time) scanner, which uses simultaneous localisation and mapping technology to create a 3D point cloud. Scan reference targets were set up over three referenced points in order to locate the scan point cloud. Scanning was carried out in accordance with Historic England guidelines, 3D Laser Scanning for Heritage 3rd Edition, 2018. Scan data was processed and trajectories quality assured in GeoSLAM Desktop software before being exported in .laz and .e57 formats. The resulting 3D point cloud was sliced and traced using SCC software to produce vectorised plans of the surveyed structures. These were georeferenced and finalised in AutoCAD 2021 The farmhouse at Hill Farm shows through its structural evolution and relationships two principal phases of development. Historic and cartographic evidence point towards a presence from at least the earlier decades of the 19th century and to a small mainly arable farmstead comprised of just a farmhouse and its adjacent threshing barn (
