Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by the Priory Bay Hotel to undertake an archaeological and geo-archaeological evaluation on land at Priory Bay Hotel, Nettlestone, Isle of Wight (NGR 46330, 09025). Thirteen trial trenches and four test pits were excavated. The work revealed Palaeolithic . A possible focus of prehistoric activity was tentatively identified covering at least 0.2 hectare and consisting of three or four ditches and a possible pit. The exact period to which the activity belongs is unclear at present, but it may date to the Iron Age. With the exception of a single sherd of early post-medieval pottery, the only other remains identified were a few probably 19th- to 20th-century drainage features. |
