Abstract:
Archaeology South-East were commissioned by Village Developments plc to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Newchapel Road, Lingfield, Surrey in advance of the development of the site. Six archaeological trial trenches, amounting to a 4% sample of the site were excavated, to expose the underlying natural geology between 67.03m aOD and 66.45m aOD. Archaeological features, comprising field boundary ditches on a variety of orientations, were revealed in four of the six trenches, clustered towards the centre of the site. The earliest boundaries may date to the 13th century and comprise elements of a field system on a north-north-west/south-south east or perpendicular east-north-east/west-south-west alignment. Other boundaries, though undated, may be post-medieval in date as most appear on available historic maps. Only one feature could not be reconciled with wider medieval or post-medieval boundary alignments and it is possible this is of greater antiquity.
