Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by Asprey Homes to undertake an archaeological evaluation on a 1.8ha site at London Road, Maresfield, East Sussex (NGR 546999 123691). The site lies within an Archaeological Notification Area associated with a medieval manorial complex, and later ironworking. A range of archaeological deposits were encountered, excavated and recorded during the evaluation of the site. A thin scatter of flintwork suggests prehistoric activity in the general area. However there were clear issues with close dating of the later buried features. The earliest are either Late Iron Age or Romano-British in date, and later features are early post-medieval, but with indications of medieval activity in the vicinity. Encountered isolated masonry contains reused medieval stonework. |
