Abstract: |
archaeological watching brief carried out by Archaeology South-East at The Old Manse, Sandlands Grove, Walton on the Hill, Surry between the 4th and 5th March 2019. The fieldwork was commissioned by Orion Heritage on behalf of their client Richard Bond during the groundworks for a rear extension. The watching brief encountered the continuation of a small gully which was found within the evaluation in 2018. Unfortunately this phase of work produced no dating however the evaluation provided a late 1st/early 2nd century AD date. A small assemblage of finds from the subsoil which sealed the feature produced Roman pottery and Medieval and Post-medieval CBM. This would appear contemporary with the scheduled villa in the neighbouring garden. Unfortunately, there was no evidence of masonry relating to the Roman Villa which might suggest the location may be aligned differently |
