Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE) were commissioned by Nexus Heritage to carry out an evaluation and excavation on land at Monkton Lane, Farnham, Surrey. The work was carried out between 14th-29th June 2010 and between 11th August-10th September 2010. In addition to a small quantity of residual prehistoric flintwork, the work uncovered evidence for six phases of activity (dated by pottery) on the site as follows:- Phase 1: Early Iron Age/Middle Iron Age, Phase 2: Late(r) Iron Age/Early Roman, Phase 3: Romano-British, Phase 4: Medieval, Phase 5: early Post-medieval and Phase 6: late Post-medieval. Phase 1: The few features attributed to this phase included a pair of possibly associated post-holes and a pair of parallel narrow ditches. The most significant feature was an undated cremation. Two undated semi-circular narrow gullies perhaps represented parts of the structural ring-grooves of round-houses. However there was no independent evidence to support this. Phase 2: This phase comprised a probable working area(s), defined by two curving gullies and c. 40 stake-holes, and an isolated ditch. Phase 3: The principal feature was a 100m long dog-legged ditch, the primary function of which was probably that of a boundary. Phases 4, 5 and 6: Several scattered features and a probable field boundary ditch were recorded. Activity during these phases was probably almost entirely agricultural, perhaps with the emphasis on arable cultivation.
