Abstract: |
A metal-detector survey was undertaken of the field south of Torksey Castle, as part of the broader University of York 'Tents to Towns' project. Magnetometer survey (doi:10.5284/1038041) had previously revealed a large number of archaeological features across the site and field-walking survey (doi:10.5284/1083529) had indicated the presence of Torksey ware kilns, as well as a cemetery which began use in the early medieval period. The aim of the metal-detector survey was to provide a useful comparative assemblage to that recovered from the site of the Viking winter camp, north of Torksey village (doi:10.5284/1018222), as well as that recovered from the survey of a second field east of the A156 (doi:10.5284/1083529). In particular, the assemblage might indicate possible artefactual links with the winter camp. It was also hoped that the survey would provide a range of dated artefacts which might be linked with the known archaeology from the site, and which might help refine the dating of activity. |
