Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in two phases between March and May 2018 on land south of Aylesbury. One hundred and four trenches were excavated during the first phase and a further thirty eight trenches in phase two. Localised flooding during the first phase of works limited the numbers of archaeological features that could be hand excavated but despite the adverse weather conditions three main centres of archaeological activity were identified in addition to a number of outlying features, chiefly boundary /enclosure ditches. Areas 5 / 6; a large number of rectilinear enclosure ditches, which appear to match the geophysical survey, demonstrate the likely presence of a Romano-British settlement. Extant Medieval ridge and furrow cultivation overlies part of the settlement area with the earlier ditches visibly surviving beneath the field system. Area 7; the archaeological activity is focused on a low hill within the centre of a flood plain. A number of late prehistoric / Romano-British ditches enclose two west-east orientated inhumation burials and a number of discrete features within the brickearth, indicating the presence of an enclosed farmstead or possible small settlement site. Areas 10 / 11 are dominated by a large concentration of late prehistoric and Romano-British ditches and occupation soils in addition to material evidence demonstrating the presence of a significant Roman building lies within the immediate area. A third inhumation burial was also recorded demonstrating the presence of a third settlement site within the survey area.
