Abstract:
The Masterplan site has been subjected to a number of previous archaeological investigations relating to different planning proposals for the area since 2000, for which development has been approved. Some of the surviving hedgerows within the Masterplan site, potentially already protected under ecological constraints, are historic boundaries which may date from at least 1770, with others originating between 1770 and 1840-1. The only heritage asset still requiring archaeological mitigation is a Roman road, confirmed during trial trench evaluation to cross the north-western extent of the Masterplan site. A condition imposed on an earlier planning application was that the road was to be fully excavated, and a programme of post-excavation analysis be undertaken, with the results compiled into an appropriate output for dissemination. No evidence could be found during the preparation of this report that this work has yet been undertaken, and an email from Jeremy Parsons confirms this. Final confirmation of all potential future mitigative work would need to be sought from Cumbria County Council's Historic Environment Service
