Abstract:		 Nine evaluation trenches and a watching brief were carried out during the construction of new student accommodation at the University of Hertfordshire's Main Campus site in Hatfield. Only one archaeological feature was present on the site - a fairly shallow ditch that contained a piece of medieval pottery and a, probably residual, sherd of roman pottery. The natural clay did, however, yield a lower Palaeolithic hand axe. This was relatively 'unrolled' suggesting it may have been found close to, if not in, situ.
