Abstract: |
The areas of investigation were initially broken out and cleared by the contractors, and subsequently excavated by MOLA staff.
The locations of the areas of excavation were recorded by MoLAS surveying team and the information was then plotted onto the OS grid. The watching brief covered the rest of the site.
The height of observations and/or archaeological remains were recorded relative to Ordnance Datum via a traverse from a survey point (Station 52) set up adjacent to the site. Station 52 (8.03m OD) was established from an OS benchmark on the corner of Headfort Place and Chapel Street (8.96m OD). An evaluation in 2006 was followed by an excavation in the NE corner of the site where a small area was found to have been undisturbed. The sequence here was natural brickearth overlain by a probable 18th-19th-c soil horizon an covered by successive 19th-c dump layers containing much building rubble. On the W side of the site the soil horizon was cut by two probable quarry pits which had been backfilled with 19th-c debris. The watching brief in the S of the site revealed truncated natural brickearth beneath the 19th-c debris and modern backfill. |
