Abstract:
As the result of an archaeological condition on the planning consent for the development of New Ramerwick Farm, Ickleford, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to create a record of the existing buildings and to undertake archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. The cartographic evidence indicates that the farmyard was built between 1795 and 1804, possibly incorporating two existing field barns, Barns 1 and 2. These appear to be the earliest structures on the site, with other barns dating to the mid - late 19th century. The present layout was established by 1882, with only relatively minor changes since that date. Barn 1 is a listed building, described as dating to the early 17th century, but the present survey has found that the listing date is inaccurate. The presence of waney edge original timbers, with bark still adhering, and gunstock jowled posts suggests that the barn is of probable early - mid 18th century date The archaeological monitoring of the site revealed no evidence of any earlier structures. The wall base exposed in Barn 2 represents the original rear wall to the barn, demolished as part of the construction of the modern extension. It also demonstrated that the earliest barns had been built directly onto a levelled ground surface. No significant archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were encountered during the archaeological monitoring and no evidence pre-dating the post-medieval period
