Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for an agricultural development at Land at Caerhays Barton, St. Michael Caerhays, St. Austell, Cornwall. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified a total of six archaeological features that broadly validate the results of the geophysical survey. The features comprised a number of ditches that are all likely to be associated with agricultural activity, however none of the features produced any dating evidence. It is likely that the features represent Medieval and Post Medieval division and drainage of the land, however Prehistoric origins cannot be ruled out due to the presence of Prehistoric settlement features to the south that can be identified on aerial photography. Further archaeological mitigation of the evaluated area is unlikely to produce any information of significant archaeological value as the shallow nature of the features and the poor condition of the features is likely to continue across the site. Furthermore, the footprint of the agricultural building largely avoids the better surviving features.
