Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for an agricultural development at Land at Higher Trestrayle Farm, Probus, Truro, Cornwall. A 75m wide by 55m wide trench was excavated by machine using a toothless grading bucket and under archaeological supervision. The stratigraphy of the site was comprised of: mid yellow-brown friable silt loam topsoil (100), mid yellow-grey-brown soft friable clay silt intermittent colluvial subsoil (101), and shillet within firm yellow clay natural (102). The only features that were identified were a series of linear cuts that were orientated approximately north-east to south-west ([103]) and north-west to south-east ([105], [107], and [109]), each of which measured approximately 0.35m wide and 0.10m deep with near vertical sloping sides, clear to sharp break of slope, and flat base. The results of the archaeological monitoring and recording indicated that there were no archaeological deposits present, and the features that were identified are likely to represent modern drainage of the land.
