Abstract: |
This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land off Belle Vue, Chawleigh, Mid Devon, Devon. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified a total of five features that broadly validated the results of the geophysical survey, with a number of linear ditches that formed doubled ditched field boundaries having been identified. None of the features produced any dating evidence, however the character of the fills and the layout of the features would suggest that they formed a part of the Post Medieval field system. Many of the features do not survive to any great depth beneath the topsoil/ploughsoil and it is likely that the multiple phases of agricultural activity have truncated the features to leave only those that were larger and deeper excavated. This would explain the intermittent nature of several of the features that were identified during the geophysical survey. The results of the archaeological evaluation trenching would suggest that no further archaeological mitigation is required on the site as the results of the geophysical survey have been shown to be reliable and the archaeological potential for the site appears to be low. |
