Abstract:
A total of thirty eight machine excavated trial trenches were investigated. The Trenches were excavated using a 360° mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless bucket, 2.2m wide, under constant archaeological supervision. Machine excavation proceeded until the top of the archaeological levels, or the top of natural deposits, whichever was the higher. Care was taken not to damage archaeological deposits through excessive use of mechanical excavation.Where archaeological deposits were encountered within the evaluationtrenches excavation continued by hand. The spoil from the trench was scanned for artefacts both visually and with a metal detector.Prior to backfilling the base of Trenches 32, 33, 35 and 37 were lined withgeo-textile membrane to aid any subsequent works that will be necessaryand to protect the integrity of archaeological deposits that were revealed. On completion of the trenches to the satisfaction of the HEO, the trencheswere backfilled using the excavated material in the approximate order theywere excavated by Wessex Archaeology and left level and compacted bymachine bucket. Archaeological features were identified in twelve trenches with most of the featuresconcentrated towards the far south-west corner and eastern part of the Site with the remainder evident around the periphery. The features identified range from ditches and pits dating to the Iron Age, as well as several undated postholes, pits, and two parallel ditches.
