Abstract:
Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Prospect Archaeology Ltd on behalf of Solar Park Developments to undertake an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching and test pitting on land off Grange Farm, Kirkby on Bain, Lincolnshire, in support of a planning application for a proposed solar farm. A trenching strategy was agreed with Lincolnshire County Council for 16, 50m evaluation trenches and 45 test pits to be excavated across the proposed development site. The test pitting strategy was abandoned after the excavation of 28 because of the low levels of finds encountered and the unexpected nature of the underlying geology. The evaluation trenching revealed archaeological remains in the southeast section of the development site, typically represented by linear ditches and a smaller number of pits several of which date to the mid to Late Iron Age. Trenches 1 to 5 contained at least two features each with the majority of the dating evidence coming from Trench 4 and a large ceramic loom weight recovered from Trench 5. Trenches 6 to 16 contained no archaeological material and very low levels of finds were recovered from 28 test pits. The focus of the archaeological activity confirms the results of a previous geophysical survey. In all, 29 ditches and six pits from five trenches were revealed in the southeastern corner of the development site (Trenches 1 to 5), which appear to form a rural farmstead or small settlement. However, with the exception of these five trenches, no other archaeological features were encountered across the rest of the development site.
