Abstract: |
Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Arcus Consulting to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry and fieldwalking on land east of Castle Road, Hartshill, Warwickshire, to support a planning application for a residential development. The geophysical survey identified a number of potential archaeological features. These included former field boundaries, identified from historic OS mapping, cultivation trends, some of which represent ridge and furrow of medieval date, and drainage, thought to be modern. A series of roughly parallel linear/curvilinear features in the southern half of the site do not respect current field boundaries and may represent stock control features or be of natural origin. There were also other linear features that may relate to former ditches, paths or tracks across the fields.
There were two large areas within the site that were not suitable for surveying due to their heavily ploughed nature. The southernmost surveyed area was heavily waterlogged, and some of the features may be related to this waterlogging.
Fieldwalking has produced a range of material from within the development area. The earliest dated find was a Mesolithic or early Neolithic burin, likely to represent casual loss during transhumant activity. Pottery recovered dated from as early as the 13th century through to the late 18th century, representing ongoing manuring of agricultural fields. There was no Roman material present, despite the well known pottery industry recorded in the wider area. A range of metal objects and other finds were broadly of post-medieval and later date and also appears to reflect casual disposal and manuring of fields with domestic waste.
Slag of a broad post-medieval date was present and was concentrated along existing field boundaries. This may indicate the presence of a former track along the field margins or the accumulation of detritus as a result of ploughing, rather than iron working activity on or near to the site. |
