Abstract: |
This report presents the results of building recording and an archaeological watching brief conducted for a development at 26-27 North Bailey, Durham City. The works comprised recording a boundary wall, and a watching brief during groundworks for a new plant room with associated services. The boundary wall between 26 and 27 North Bailey was recorded before it was dismantled. The watching brief recorded the remains of several stone and brick walls. Most of these walls align with structures on historic Ordnance Survey maps, and relate to post-medieval property boundaries, and out-buildings. It is possible that stone foundations for some of these walls reflect earlier structures on the site.
A small assemblage comprising a pot sherd, glass and animal bones dating from the medieval period onwards was recovered from the archaeological deposits. These deposits probably accumulated over time and are significantly disturbed. |
