Abstract: |
An Archaeological Field Evaluation at Land to the South of Mitchell Avenue was undertaken during August 2013, involving the excavation of 9 trial trenches, all 3m wide totalling 683m in length within the evaluation area. Of the 9 trenches excavated, archaeological remains were found within two trenches: Trench 1 and Trench 2, while a complex of undetermined deposits and infill were identified within Trench 6. Modern rubbish dating to C20th-21st was found towards the east end of Trench 3 and also within Trench 4N. In conclusion, the evaluation identified the objective of the exploration and identified activities associated with historic coal extraction within the south west of the evaluation area. |
