Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological building recording was undertaken by Bernicia Archaeology The area under investigation was a redundant arrangement of stable blocks around a central courtyard. There was no condition for an archaeological watching brief associated with the development. Following detailed recording of the South Stable Range and the remains of the North, East and West stable Ranges, the report confirmed that the four structures were purpose built during several phases to form an almost complete enclosed stable quadrangle around a central courtyard. The report also advises that the Town Farm complex was a worthy example of 'High Farming' in North Northumberland in the mid C18t h. Evidence was found of the courtyard being resurfaced with concrete in 1963, at this point the West Range had already been demolished. |
