Abstract: |
A programme of Archaeological Trial Trenching was requested by the local planning authority following the submission of a planning application for the construction of 5 dwellings at Foggon's Yard in Rothbury Northumberland. Three trenches were excavated representing approximately a 10% sample of the proposed development site.No man-made structures were identified within any of the three trenches. Within Trench 001 and 002 a medieval surface at a depth of 1.18m was identified. The deposit contained medieval pottery (4 shards) present within the northernmost 5m of Trench 001 and throughout the east-west aligned Trench 02.The excavation of north-south aligned Trench 01 established that deposits to its south pre-dating the 19th century, have been truncated. The north end of Trench 03 had intriguing stratigraphy which included a deposit containing early medieval pottery which was sealed by an alluvial-derived deposit comprised of both cross and inter-bedded sands, gravel, silts and pebbles. The alluvial derived deposit in turn sealed a mid-grey, silty-sand also containing medieval pottery. In conclusion, the trial trenches identified deposits containing medieval ceramics, all below 1.18m. The medieval deposits located towards the north of the evaluation area have been subjected to an period of alluvial incursion. |
