Abstract:
This volume comprises the specialist reports from an archaeological evaluation and excavation at Vaughan Way, Leicester (NGR SK 5840 0475) between 2003 and 2005 in advance of the construction of a John Lewis store, the centrepiece of the new Highcross Leicester development built between 2005 and 2008. After a programme of trial trenching to evaluate the archaeological potential of the site, one large and several small areas were selected for full excavation in view of the damage which would occur to buried remains from the groundwork proposals. The principal discoveries consisted of two Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured buildings, the medieval church of St. Peter and its graveyard, a high-status stone building with undercroft and a later medieval mud and framed structure. The work was funded by Hammerson UK Properties and the excavation archive is stored by Leicester City Museums Service under Accession Number A2.2003.This volume contains the specialist reports. The stratigraphic sequence for the excavations can be found in ULAS Report No. 2009-156 (Vol. 1 of this report); the skeletal analysis can be found in ULAS Report No. 2009-047 (Vol. 3 of this report).
