Abstract:
In total, three phases of fieldwork were carried out between 2016 and 2017. The initial evaluation in 2016 had found several palaeochannels containing burnt and worked flint suggesting hunter-gatherer-fisher activity on the braided river system of the east bank of the River Ember. this activity possibly dating to between the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods. The second phase in 2017 uncovered a large, curvilinear enclosure ditch dating to the Late Bronze Age/early Iron Age period. It was re-cut in the Late Iron Age/early Romano_British period and its orientation changed to form more formalised co-axial field divisions. Medieval activity was present with a single ditch containing a cache of 12th century pottery. Finally, the third phase of activity in the south of the site uncovered the north wall of the north wing of Ember Court. The base foundation courses appear to have dated to the Tudor period with repairs, re-builds and the addition of buttresses occurring in the later 18th-19th centuries. The evolving formal gardens around the house recorded during the map regression exercise was confirmed through excavation.
