Abstract: |
Following the advice of Historic England three hand excavated evaluation test pits were undertaken to test the potential for archaeology in the footprint of the new build. All the test pits had to be moved to varying degrees due to the presence of a very steep slope, woodland and a stone retaining wall. The investigations revealed that the area had been reworked in the latter part of the 20th century, during the conversion of the area from a working farm to private house. This was demonstrated via a large spread of modern material that lay directly onto the natural substrate. The third test pit was located immediately parallel to a modern stone retaining wall and revealed that the lawn directly overlay the natural with little else of note excepting the construction cut and backfill for the modern wall. |
