Abstract:
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of five trenches: • Trench 1 (20m x 1.6m) • Trench 2 (10m x 1.6m) • Trench 2.1 (5.3m x 1.6m) • Trench 3 (8m x 1.7m) • Trench 3.1 (8m x 1.8m). The trench layout was amended from that shown in the WSI (CA 2022) due to the presence of live services. In July and August 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation at Cornwallis Street Car Park, Hastings, East Sussex. A total of five trenches were excavated. The evaluation recorded a series of brick wall foundations at the site. These corresponded in alignment with building plots shown on late 19th century cartographic sources. The structures were generally set onto made ground layers, indicating that extensive levelling took place prior to/during the late 19th century development of the site. Geoarchaeological test pits excavated within the bases of the trenches exposed a series of silt/clay layers. It is possible that these are alluvial deposits, but they may also represent marine infills of a former harbour, or colluvium derived from a nearby Wadhurst Clay Formation outcrop.
