Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land to the rear of the Vine Inn, London Street, Chertsey in order to examine the possibility of archaeological deposits surviving in the area under threat from the development proposals. Three trial trenches were excavated; trenches 1 and 3 were located where prior post-medieval disturbance of late 17th to 19th century date had occurred. Trench 2 revealed eleven features of late Bronze Age date indicative of a settlement. A large amount of late Bronze Age pottery, struck flintwork and burnt flint were recovered within the small area investigated within trench 2. In trench 1 the footings of two buildings of probable 18th century date and a brick culvert of probable 19th century date were revealed, along with evidence for activity from the late 17th-19th century. Trench 3 revealed a brick culvert of probable 19th century date and a number of layers which yielded numerous artefacts ranging in date from the late 17th-19th century. |
