Abstract: |
The historic building survey has concluded that the grade II listed Poplar Villa started life as a small agricultural workers cottage built during the second half of the 17th century by local landowners and farmers, the Wrens. This date, supported by the character and style of the brickwork and carpentry, broadly concurs with the statutory list description for Poplar Villa which proposes a construction date of between the late 17th and turn of the 18th century. It has also shown that Poplar Villa was originally built as two separate units, divided internally by a central party wall, providing accommodation on both ground and first floor and accessed by a common front entrance. This original two bay plan, plus the utility of the outshut and evidence of corresponding garret rooms can still be recognised, although much has been lost to modern unsympathetic internal alterations and a re-roofing. |
