Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd (then PCA Midlands, now PCA Newark) were appointed by Anglian Water to undertake an archaeological monitoring and recording on the excavation of a trench for the installation of a new water mains pipe connecting the hamlet of Driby, with an existing pipeline close to the village of Brinkhill. The route of the pipeline trench cut through fields adjacent to the site of the shrunken me-dieval village of Driby. Intensive fieldwalking ahead of major water pipeline works in 2011 found a scatter of 26 prehistoric struck flints c.200m southwest of the village of Brinkhill. Also found during the fieldwalking exercise were 25 sherds of Roman pottery thought to indicate the presence of a Romano-British settlement or farmstead in the vicinity, and the route of a possible Roman Road. Although initial settlement at Driby is believed to have originated in the Anglo-Saxon period scant evidence from this period has been derived from or near the site. To the west of Driby, at the other end of the route of the pipeline, lies the village of Brinkhill where medieval settlement included three moated sites pertain-ing to the Manor of Greetham. The observations identified three distinct areas of archaeological activity across the route of the pipeline comprising mid-1st - mid 2nd century Romano-British ditches and pit-type features and undated, but also possibly contemporary features. The features possibly represent Romano-British agricultural activity associated with nearby settlement, although no evidence of settlement structures were found. A low quantity of Late-Saxon and Saxo-Norman pottery sherds was recovered from a ploughsoil in a field at the eastern end of the pipeline as was a significant quantity of me-dieval pottery although no archaeological features were associated with the pottery from these two periods.
