Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on land within the churchyard of the church of St Margaret of Antioch, Barley, Hertfordshire (NGR TL 40176 38457) on the 6th of November 2017 (Plate 1-3; Figure 1-2). The archaeological work was commissioned by Freeland Rees Roberts on behalf of the Barley PCC as part of the exterior refurbishment of the church. The area to be monitored consisted of a small area directly adjacent to the north side of the church, where new cuttings for drainage pipes were to be excavated. The site code for this project was HBCB17. The intrusive works comprised the excavation of four hand-excavated drainage cuts, two of which connected directly to the guttering of the church to the south. In all cases the cuttings were re-excavating the locations of previously existing drainage pipe channels. During the course of the excavation no archaeological features were observed and no artefacts of archaeological significance recovered. Topsoil and subsoil deposits were present to a maximum depth of 0.63m; the natural was not reached.
