Abstract: |
This report presents the results of archaeological test pitting that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) to assess the degree of disturbance that was caused by the excavation and the subsequent backfilling of a water pipe trench at Adworthy Brook, Witheridge, Devon. The results of the archaeological test pitting would indicate that some care was taken to separate the turf and to replace it, however a mixing of the topsoil/subsoil and the natural did occur. The original stratigraphy along the line of the trench was therefore not fully restored. It is unclear whether this indicates that the topsoil/subsoil and the natural were mixed, or whether this indicates that the topsoil/subsoil and the natural were separated as per DEFRA/MAFF guidance. The dense yellow clay natural would be more easily recovered from the grass than the topsoil/subsoil which, being more friable, might be expected to experience a greater loss in the longer grass. |
