Abstract: |
The evaluation trench to the west of museum gallery 2 at the Roman Army Museum, 6m x 2m to establish the nature of the preservation and site between a scheduled protrusion between the museum and an old agricultural nissen shed prior to a planning application for a new activity and learhning centre for the museum. The trench was excavated by hand in February 2022 and recored no Roman remains, with the natural subsoil encounterd at a depth of 1.7m below the surface. The evaluation trench did not positively identiy any Roman features and recoverd no Roman artefacts from this area. It did locate a rubbish deposit which can be associated with the 19th century farm, nightsoils, pottery and old leather shoes from that period, but no Roman features or remains. |
