Abstract: |
Archaeological survey in partnership with the National Trust (owners of the estate), in order to record the estate's archaeological features and to provide a basis for the improved management of the historic estate. Among the more important sites surveyed were the Iron Age hillfort of Croft Ambrey and the remains of formal historic gardens adjacent to Croft Castle itself. Besides the relict prehistoric farmed landscape traced at various places within the property, several enclosed settlements were noted as surviving earthworks. The survey also included the deserted medieval village by Croft Church, possible transhumance platforms, and the remains of former common-edge farmsteads at Bircher Common. Extensive evidence for the development both of the formal gardens near the mansion, and ornamental features elsewhere, was recorded. |
