Ring Ditch 'b' at Cople, Bedfordshire
James F Dyer
1 - 9
Rescue excavations revealed an oval ring ditch of unknown date, containing the base of a rectangular limestone structure, and evidence of large-scale peat burning, possibly as a funeral pyre. Two extended male burials were also found, and probable early Mid-Saxon pottery occurred in the primary ditch filling.
Recent Fieldwork at Maiden Bower
Joshua Pollard
Michael A Hamilton
10 - 18
A geophysical survey of Maiden Bower near Dunstable has revealed a previously unsuspected prehistoric enclosure within the interior of the Iron Age hillfort. Previous discoveries and the recent survey work illustrate a long sequence of often quite intensive activity at the site, complementing a picture which has been emerging through rescue and salvage excavations along this stretch of the Chiltern ridge since the turn of the century.
A Romano-British Shell-Gritted Pottery and Tile Manufacturing Site at Harrold, Bedfordshire
Anthony G Brown
19 - 107
A group of kilns making shell-gritted pottery was excavated in advance of chisel ploughing. The pottery from the kilns, and that from the numerous clay pits which were also found, indicate the manufacture of this type of ware at Harrold from the mid-1st to the early 5th centuries AD. The evolving typology of the kilns and also that of the pottery is discussed. A probable tile kiln was also found; the tiles made at Harrold are described and their manufacture assigned to the late 2nd century and to the late 3rd to mid-4th century.
Analysis of Anglo-Saxon Solder Deposited on a Copper-Alloy Disc from the Cemetery at Marina Drive, Bedfordshire
Tony Gibson
Paul Harris
108 - 118
Among the objects displayed at Luton Museum, Wardon Park is an artefact described in the Accession Register (52/120/58) as "Bronze Disc with punched decoration"; it was found, with other grave goods in Burial E3, that of a young girl at the Anglo-Saxon Cemetery, Marina Drive, Bedfordshire. Its position in the grave indicates that it had been attached to her waist-belt or chatelaine, presumably to serve as a decorative ornament, possibly having some amuletic significance. The purpose of this article is to record the discovery and resulting scientific examination of solder found adhering to the underside of the disc and to offer an explanation as to its original function and purpose.
Biggleswade West
Michael Dawson
119 - 136
Archaeological evaluation and excavation during the construction of a sewerage pipeline west of Biggleswade was intended to record and investigate evidence for the impact of early man on the landscape of the middle Ivel valley at Biggleswade. In fact, the survey and excavation led not only to the recovery of significant environmental evidence, but to the identification of one of the major causative factors in the development of medieval Biggleswade.

Kevan Fadden
137
Members of the Ampthill allotments Association informed the Ampthill Archaeological and Local History Society that they had found a concentration of white clay pipe fragments while tending their gardens.
