Abstract:		 A heritage assessment was carried out prior to a range of proposed alterations to the Abbey House Hotel, Barrow-in-Furness. The site is within the precinct of the Furness Abbey, which was established in 1127, however, the site was undeveloped until the construction of the Abbey House as a residence and guesthouse to the designs of Sir Edward Lutyens in 1914. It became an old people's home in 1951 and was converted to a hotel in 1985 with an addition at the north end in c2000. Most of the proposed development areas are likely to have been disturbed by the hotel's construction and subsequent extension, the exception being the area of proposed overflow car parking (Area 5c), which is some distance from the buildings. It is recommended that an archaeological evaluation or geophysical survey be carried out in the case of Area 5c.
