Abstract:
The fieldwork comprised the excavation of eight trenches (Trenches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 measured 30m in length and 2m in width, Trench 7 measured 24m in length and 2m in width). Trenches 3 and 5 targeted circular anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey, the remaining trenches were randomly located. Trench 7 was shortened due to the presence of overhead electricity cables. All trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. All machine excavation was undertaken under constant archaeological supervision to the top of the first significant archaeological horizon or the natural substrate, whichever was encountered first. Deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential and two deposits were sampled. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in December 2017 at Showell Nurseries, Chippenham, Wiltshire. Eight trenches were excavated. The evaluation identified a number of archaeological features which generally correlated well with a preceding geophysical survey. Archaeologically features encountered included two ring ditches and a posthole. Worked flint was recovered from the ditch fills of the larger ring ditch. An undated ditch was also revealed, as was evidence for medieval ridge and furrow agriculture. Modern plough scars, postholes, foundation trenches and service trenches, relating to recent agricultural and nursery activity, were also identified.
