Abstract:
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 47 trenches, each of 50m length and 1.8m width. These trenches were split between the main proposed extraction area (Trenches 1-41) and haul road and surge pile areas (Trenches 42-47). The trenches were located to test geophysical anomalies and to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. In August 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Ripple East, Worcestershire. A total of 47 trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were identified throughout the site, closely correlating to the results of preceding geophysical survey. The activity was concentrated within the western extent of the site, where an area of enclosed late prehistoric to Roman settlement was recorded, with ditches, pits and postholes identified, alongside a substantial artefactual assemblage and evidence for possible industrial activity. Evidence of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation was identified across the site, correlating with geophysical trends, and former post-medieval/modern agricultural boundaries were also recorded. Deposits indicative of modern quarrying and subsequent reinstatement were recorded in the south-western extent of the site. Numerous features were identified throughout the site which could not be dated artefactually, although many were recorded in the vicinity of dated features and are potentially contemporary.
