Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of a Private Client as part of archaeological work before building works associated with a proposed single house plot at Land at Denelea, Chilla Road, Halwill Junction, Devon. This work was carried out by S. Stevens on 17th February 2023 in accordance with the Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI; Boyd 2020) having been agreed during consultation with the Devon County Council Historic Environment Team (DCHET). A narrow trench (Trench 1) measuring approximately 20m long x 0.6m wide was excavated to a depth of c.0.30m, by machine and under archaeological supervision, on the north boundary of the site, for the installation of a drain. A further two trenches were excavated across the site, both orientated north-south and measuring 1.3m wide. Trench 2 was approximately 13m long and excavated to a depth of c.0.35m, located in the centre of the site, intended to investigate the area that would see the installation of a concrete raft for the house plot. Trench 3 was located to the east side of the site and measured approximately 7m long, excavated to a depth of c.0.36m and was placed to investigate the area that would become garden/driveway. The stratigraphy of the site comprised topsoil (100), a mid-brown friable silt-clay up to c.0.35m thick; directly overlying a natural (101), of mid-yellow firm clays. No archaeological features or deposits were identified within the trenches and no finds were recovered from site. No further works were therefore monitored.
