Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land at Antron Bungalows, Church Road, Mabe Burnthouse, Mabe, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2021) that was drawn up in consultation with Cornwall County Council. The report has been produced to fulfil Condition 5 of Planning Application PA19/07232. A total of three short evaluation trenches were opened by a 5t tracked mechanical excavator using a 1.6m wide toothless grading bucket and under archaeological supervision across a broadly sub-rectangular area that measured c.46m in length by c.23m in width. A sewer main crossed the eastern part of the site on a N-to-S alignment, an overhead power cable crossed the site on a WSW-to-ENE alignment, and at the western edge of the site the ground rose steeply to Church Road. A similar stratigraphy was exposed in each of the three evaluation trenches: a friable grey-brown sandy-silt loam topsoil c.0.25m thick; overlaying a subsoil c.0.25-0.50m thick (almost identical to the topsoil save for the presence of common sub-angular blocky granite stones that measured c.80-150mm in diameter); overlaying a greyish-yellow to pale greenish-yellow decayed granite gravel natural substrate. A second subsoil (102) was noted in Trench 01 that lay between the subsoil and the natural substrate and that was a clean soft mid grey-brown sandy silt c.0.14m thick. A black alkathene water pipe crossed Trench 02 and Trench 03, however no archaeological features were noted in any of the three evaluation trenches. A selection of finds from the topsoil and the subsoil consisted of: 1x fragment (1g) of clay tobacco pipe stem; 1x sherd (3g) of white refined earthenware; 1x sherd (1g) of Mocha ware; 1x rim sherd (41g) from a post medieval micaceous Cornish coarseware panchion (Type 3 Bowl); and 1x body sherd (3g) from a late or early post medieval pot.
