Abstract: |
This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) as part of a programme of archaeological works that were associated with the creation of a proposed wildlife park on Land at Winsford Lane, Halwill Junction, Torridge, Devon. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2022). A total of four evaluation trenches, each measuring c.1.90m in width and c.30m in length, were excavated to the depth of in-situ weathered natural by mechanical excavator using a toothless grading bucket. The stratigraphy of the site was comprised of: topsoil, a dark brown friable-soft silt-clay c.0.10-0.20m thick; which overlaid subsoil, a mid-dark grey-brown friable-soft silt-clay up to c.0.20m thick; which overlaid the natural, a mid yellow firm to soft clay. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified no features or deposits despite the proximity of prehistoric funerary monuments and more recent agricultural activity within the surrounding landscape. |
