Abstract: |
This guide describes Merseyside's local building stones in their geological context. It includes examples of buildings and structures where the stones have been used. The building stones of Merseyside fall into three well-defined groups, both stratigraphically and geographically. Stratigraphically, the oldest building
stones were sourced from the Pennine Lower and Middle Coal Measures of the Upper Carboniferous. These rocks are found mainly within the eastern
part of the area, forming higher ground around St Helens at the western extremity of the Rossendale Hills, and within the Lancashire Coalfield. Faulting has also brought these rocks to the surface further to the west, around Huyton and Prescot in the borough of Knowsley. |
