Abstract:
Outline planning permission was granted by Cherwell District Council for development of land to the north-east of Skimmingdish Lane, Launton, Bicester, Oxfordshire, comprising up to 48,308sqm of employment floorspace, servicing and circulation areas, vehicular and pedestrian access from Skimmingdish Lane and landscaping. The trial trenching comprised the excavation of 86 trenches, each measuring 30m x 1.8m. The trenches were positioned to achieve an even coverage across five fields The majority of features on site were dated to the modern period. They were concentrated in the southern corner of the area, The ditches were largely aligned NE-SW or NW-SE and are likely to represent divisions or drainage associated with former allotments shown on early edition OS maps. Modern ditches to the north in Trench 50 are also likely to be associated with drainage. Pits revealed in Trenches 21, 24 and 76 also proved to be modern. A small number of undated ditches were excavated . These were generally in close proximity to modern features and may be of similar date. The two parallel modern ditches one of which had a limestone base covered with large limestone pieces, are likely to be associated with drainage of the area. Irregular silt-filled pits cut into the limestone are most likely to be the product of post-medieval or modern quarrying. Although there is no cartographic evidence for quarrying within the area the 1919 OS map shows several quarry pits alongside Skimmingdish Lane.
