Abstract:
A late Bronze Age palisaded enclosure and Romano-British settlement were excavated between August and November 2001 in advance of quarrying. In the northern part of the site was a palisaded enclosure, oval in plan, measuring 37m by 29m with the longest dimension orientated north-west to south-east. The boundary was formed by close set posts inserted into a continuous construction slot. A narrow entrance with a short out-turn of the palisade on one side was located in the south-east quadrant of the enclosure. The southern half of the enclosure had a second palisade, of lighter construction, running concentrically within the main palisade. This had an entrance in line with that in the outer boundary and of the same construction. Close to the centre of the enclosure was a post-built circular structure measuring approximately 8.5m in diameter. Pits within the structure contained cylindrical loom/thatch wieghts and pottery dated to the late Bronze Age. In the southern part of the site ditches formed a series of rectilinear enclosures covering an area of 60m by 50m, continuing beyond the limit of excavation towards the south. A small number of pits and post holes were found within the enclosed area including a single four-post structure. An enclosed cremation cemetery was found at the southern edge of the site.
