Abstract:
For part of the Building Schools for the future programme an archaeological desk-based assessment (DBA) carried out by Albion Archaeology (2008) demonstrated the need for a non-intrusive (built heritage assessment) of the school buildings within the area. Albion Archaeology undertook the built heritage assessment in January 2009 and produced a report on the results ). In February 2009 Albion Archaeology carried out the intrusive evaluation. The evaluation revealed the remains of several ditched field boundaries and/or enclosures in the southern part site .The morphological and textural similarities between the ditches and their deposits suggest that they are broadly from the same period. Artefactual evidence suggests they are possibly Roman in date. However, the overall scarcity of pottery recovered, coupled with the levels of abrasion suggests the dates should be viewed with caution. The possible Roman remains identified in the southern part of the area represent low density field-systems within what was, prior to the 20th century, an area of open farmland. These remains are considered to be of local significance. Their identification augments our knowledge of the limits/locations of historic farmland and settlement in Stevenage.
