Abstract: |
The archaeological works consisted of a single evaluation trench (Trench 1), which was located in the central-west part of the site, along with a ‘wedge’ shaped area of excavation (Area 1) at the south of the site.
Non-significant overburden was removed, under constant archaeological supervision, to the top of archaeological remains, or the underlying natural deposits, whichever was encountered first. This was achieved through use of a 360° mechanical excavator, equipped with a toothless grading bucket. Features and spoil tips were visually scanned for finds and subject to a metal detecting survey. Any Modern finds were noted and discarded; all archaeological finds were retained. Two residual sherds of Iron Age or Anglo-Saxon pottery represented the only evidence for pre-Medieval activity within, or near to the site. Numerous and potentially substantial gravel quarry pits, which occurred in both the evaluation trench and the area of excavation, are likely to have dated to the Medieval to Post-medieval periods. The site is consequently interpreted as being situated in an area of former gravel quarrying. There is, therefore, a significant potential that this activity may have damaged, or entirely removed, any earlier remains. The results of the investigation are of moderate archaeological significance. |
